Project Description

The Center for Engineering and Planning (CEP) was contracted by UNDP to design a state-of-the-art medical waste treatment facility in Gaza and the Northern Governorates for the benefit of the Joint Service Council for Solid Waste Management (JCS). This facility aimed to address critical challenges in healthcare waste management, ensuring the safe and efficient treatment of 1,200 kg/day of infectious medical waste using microwave technology.

CEP's responsibilities extended beyond technical design to encompass strategic oversight and ensuring compliance with international health and environmental standards.

Role of CEP in the Project

Comprehensive Facility Design and Technical Assistance in Construction:

CEP developed detailed designs for the medical waste treatment facility, incorporating cutting-edge microwave treatment technology to sterilize infectious waste. The design emphasized operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Additionally, CEP provided a team of experts to assist the client during construction supervision.

Regulatory Compliance:

The team ensured that the facility adhered to global standards for medical waste management, aligning with environmental protection policies and healthcare regulations. CEP assisted the JCS to carry out EIA, develop EIA and acquire environmental and construction permits.

Process Optimization:

Leveraging its expertise, CEP designed workflows that maximized safety compliance, minimized operational costs while maximizing the facility's capacity, effectively addressing the limitations of existing waste treatment systems.

Stakeholder Coordination:

CEP facilitated collaboration among key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, municipalities, and the Environment Quality Authority, to ensure seamless integration of the facility into the broader healthcare waste management system.
